What is a Mommy Blogger

Monday, October 19, 2009

Mommy blogger, mom blogger, momma blogger, mama blogger or just plain blogger. Whatever you want to call me is fine with me. For awhile now I have taken offense with that term "mommy blogger" and had a hard time naming my site after it. But, I realized it is just a buzz word and doesn't sum up who I am. Yes, I am a mom but I am so much more. In the context of this blog, mommy blogger means women who blog who just might be moms. However, men are always welcome as I know there is a small percentage in the Blogosphere who are Dads who blog :-)

Whatever you call us, we are a growing force to be reckoned with. Mom bloggers are a fast growing community of women, who for lack of better words, are SAHM (Stay at Home Moms) or WAHM (Work at Home Moms). Women who have found a way to make money and stay at home with their children instead of schlepping off to a job outside of the home.

From Advertising Age
NEW YORK (AdAge.com) 6.08.09 -- "Despite their lightweight moniker, mommy bloggers have become marketing business heavyweights. Now said to number in the millions, these online women have cobbled together content networks that rival some mainstream media companies. And they're clearly a force that retailers underestimate at their own peril. In this "About Digital" report, we talk to a retail giant, an analyst, major publisher and a PR agency to better understand how various segments of the industry are adjusting to this phenomenon."
You can't really put an of us "mommy bloggers" in a box because we are all unique. Each situation is different. The connotation of mom bloggers makes you think of someone who might be uneducated, someone who sites around in her robe and slippers watching soaps all day and spends the rest of her time wiping noses, changing diapers, and washing dishes. While this is a huge part of a Mom's day - well maybe not the soap opera part - it is not the only thing she is interested in or does.

What is a Mommy BloggerMoms come in all shapes and size. Some are young and some are older. Some have babies, some have children in elementary school, or high school, college or maybe they are grown. Maybe the next mommy blogger you meet will be a grandma like me. Does that make me less of a mom blogger? Do I have less impact in the ever growing marketing power of moms? Absolutely not! Every mom has a say in this thing we call the Blogosphere.

When my children we young there was no Internet. I stayed home with my children for 13 years and was very alone. All of the other moms were out working and I was all alone trying to fill my days from the time the children left for school to the time they came home and then my husband came home from work. I chose to stay at home. I had no desire to go out and work because I could see all of the added stress it would bring to my life. It wasn't that anything was wrong with working outside of the home, it just wasn't for me and didn't suit my personality.

It wasn't that many years ago either. I was staying home when society was telling Moms the way to live their lives was to go out and have a career in the man's world. I spent my days cleaning house, doing laundry, watching TV and learning every hobby under the sun. Once I mastered one hobby I went on to the next. I was trying to find a way to fill my days with something meaningful besides just taking care of the family. I had aspirations, dreams, and passion but no outlet for them. This is my story and while there is nothing wrong when Mom wants to go outside of the home to work I want to let you know there is nothing wrong when she wants to stay home either!

The Internet has changed a lot of things. The way we interact with each other. The way us mom's are able to make a living or even just extra money. The way we shop. And the way we socialize. The Web is bringing back the way moms used to connect with each other - over the fence, in the backyard while they were hanging out clothes, or just "visiting" over a cup of tea in the afternoon. Blogs are our common grounds and a place we can share, connect, and now work.

If the Internet in all it's glory had been around when my kids were growing up - well, I probably would have ignored them so it's probably a good thing I didn't have it. I can say that now I am totally addicted to it and spend most of my waking hours glued to the other side of a computer screen.

As a Mommy blogger you are probably wondering how you can fit into this growing community and that is why I started this blog. I have been teaching people what I know about computers, the Internet, and now blogging since 1994. My passion is to see people learn and grow from whatever I am able to teach with them. As you learn I am sure I will learn right along with you. Whatever I learn I pass along to you and in turn you pass on to someone else. Something moms have been doing for centuries.
